Reacties op Elsbeth Etty en het antisemitisme

IMO Blog, 2010

"The Palestinian Arabs show on all levels a great sympathy for the new Germany and its Fuhrer, a sympathy whose value is particularly high as it is based on a purely ideological foundation," a Nazi official in Palestine wrote in a letter to Berlin in 1937.

A British Foreign Office report from 1939 reports of "news of a consignment of arms from Germany, sent via Turkey and addressed to Ibn Saud (king of Saudi Arabia), but really intended for the Palestine insurgents." Britain's chief military officer in Mandatory Palestine also noted reports "regarding import of German arms at intervals for some years now."

British documents from the same period, and German records photographed by an American spy and sent to the British government, said that a number of Nazi agents were sent to Mandatory Palestine, in order to forge alliances with Palestinian leaders, and urge them to reject a partition of the land between the Jewish and Arab populations.

A second Nazi agent, Dr. Franz Reichart, was reported to be actively working with Palestinian Arabs by the British Criminal Investigation Division "to help coordinate Arab and German propaganda." Reichart was also head of the German Telegraphic Agency in Jerusalem.

German records show that the Nazis viewed the establishment of a Jewish state with great concern. A 1937 report from German General Consulate in Palestine said: "The formation of a Jewish state… is not in Germany's interest because a (Jewish) Palestinian state would create additional national power bases for international Jewry such as for example the Vatican State for political Catholicism or Moscow for the Communists. Therefore, there is a German interest in strengthening the Arabs as a counter weight against such possible power growth of the Jews."

http://www.zionism-israel.com/blog/archives/00000475.html

IMO Blog, 2010

Etty zegt zelf later in haar column:

Nieuwe Free Gaza vloot?

Iran declares boycott on Coca Cola, Intel and 'Zionists'

Ahmadinejad signs law forbidding Iranian broadcast authority from airing advertisements for 'Zionist' companies. Black list include American companies owned by Jews and firms that do business with Israel. Nestle, IBM, others in crosshairs

Dudi Cohen

Published: 06.30.10, 17:49

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad signed Wednesday a new amendment to a law in the Islamic Republic that forbids the airing of advertisements for "Zionist companies." The blacklist of prohibited companies is comprised mainly of international companies, mainly American, owned by Jews or that operate branches in Israel.

Among those on the list are Coca Cola, Nestle, Intel, and IBM.

The boycott is rooted in Iran's "Palestinian support law," which acts as a response to assertions that Israel prevented goods from entering the Gaza Strip during its raid on the flotilla.

The amendment obligates a number of government ministries to establish a committee to identify and locate products from "Zionist" companies being sold in Iran. In addition, this committee will be charged with finding the names of leading figures in the blacklisted companies so that they may be boycotted as well.

This move is another link in the chain of efforts made by Iran to isolate Israel in the world in accordance with a decision passed in Iranian parliament on the matter. Iran also plans on bringing forth a resolution to boycott Israel in the UN and in other international forums, including the Organization of the Islamic Conference and the Arab League.

The amendment also obligates the Iranian foreign ministry to present annual reports on the progress made in the Israeli boycott.

Beyond wanting to bring harm to Israel, the amendment may also be an indirect response to the new round of sanctions recently imposed on Iran by the West over its nuclear program. The move is intended mainly for internal purposes, in order to increase civilian support of the Palestinians.

Palestijnse Jodenhaat nummer 15794:

"The Jews, the enemies of Allah and of His Messenger, the enemies of Allah and of His Messenger! Enemies of humanity in general, and of Palestinians in particular... The Prophet says: 'You shall fight the Jews and kill them..."
[PA TV (Fatah), Jan. 29, 2010]

Sheikh Muhammad Hussein, Mufti of Jerusalem and Palestine:
"The Al-Aqsa Mosque is threatened by the plans of the enemies of Allah [the Jews], who have violated all faith and religious laws, and even deviated from their humanity."

Click here to see the PMW bulletin on PA TV sermon on "Jews are the enemies of Allah and humanity."

Last week a PA TV host in a conversation with a child likewise referred to the Jews as "our enemies."

The PA Mufti made a similar accusation last month, when he told the PA daily newspaper Al-Hayat Al-Jadida that Israel was planning to destroy the Al-Aqsa Mosque in order to build its "alleged temple" on the ruins [May 22, 2010].

Both Hamas and the Palestinian Authority (Fatah) have generated and sustained religious hatred by disseminating the libel that Israel is attempting to destroy the Al-Aqsa Mosque. This libel is often combined with the call to "defend Al-Aqsa" from the Jews.

Now, as Israel relaxes its restrictions, the company has joined fellow manufacturers including Pepsi-Cola bottlers Yazegi Group in demanding that Hamas protect local industries and refuse imports of juice, soda and snack foods. Officials of the Islamic movement have heeded the calls and are barring entry of such items as Israeli grapefruit juice and potato chips.

Gaza Juice Maker Seeks Protection as Israel Relaxes Blockade
June 27, 2010, 5:16 PM EDT
By Jonathan Ferziger and Saud Abu Ramadan

June 28 (Bloomberg) -- Israel's blockade of the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip has been a bonanza for Palestine Food Industries Co., the only functioning juice maker in the Gaza Strip, with sales increasing ten-fold as the embargo kept out competition.

"The policy of the government is to protect and maintain local products and industry and employ a large number of workers who have no job due to the siege," Ziad Zaza, the Hamas economy minister, said in an e-mailed response to questions about the restrictions on Israeli goods.

Israel has been under increased international pressure to relax its blockade since its May 31 commando raid on a flotilla of aid ships to Gaza left nine Turkish pro-Palestinian activists dead.

The embargo led to smuggling via tunnels dug under the Egyptian border, making the production of goods more expensive as smugglers' charges and Hamas taxes on the passages increased costs.

"The quality is low but the prices are very high," said Omar Shaban, director of Pal-Think, an economic research institute in Gaza City.

Fresh Fruit Shortage

The Israeli government said June 20 it will loosen the blockade so that all food will be let in and only weapons and items that have a military use are kept out. Israel closed its border with Gaza and restricted imports after Hamas seized full control of the coastal enclave in 2007 following a violent struggle with the secular Fatah movement, once its partner in a power-sharing arrangement.

Human rights groups including Amnesty International say the embargo has devastated local industries and caused widespread suffering. Israeli officials have said there is no humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The blockade initially made it difficult for Gaza City- based Palestine Food, which is owned by the Palestinian Authority's Palestine Investment Fund, to get fresh fruit to make its drinks. The company, which largely produced citrus concentrates for juice production before the blockade -- 90 percent of which were exported -- changed its formula after access to foreign markets was cut.

"We diluted it with water and added sugar and flavoring," said Haytham Qannan, the juice factory's procurement manager. "It tasted good and sold very well."

Rival Drinks

The company now produces Tropica-brand grapefruit and orange drinks, which have less fruit content. Palestine Food also started producing a line of Frouta jams, Lamooni lemon juice and Tamtam ketchup after Israel imposed restrictions.

The company's revenue grew to $1.8 million in 2009 from $145,780 in 2006, Qannan said. Staff has quadrupled since 2006 to 65. The company's $16-million plant was donated by the government of Italy.

If Hamas allows Israeli juice to enter Gaza, Palestine Food will have to compete with Primor juices made by Gan Shmuel Food Industries Ltd., based on the Gan Shmuel kibbutz south of Haifa, and the Tapuzina-brand produced by closely held Jafora Tabori Ltd., based in Rehovot, near Tel Aviv.

Gaza City-based Yazegi Group's Pepsi factory published newspaper ads calling on Hamas not to allow rival soft drinks into Gaza, according to its director Rajab al-Ghazali. Al-Awda Factories Co., which makes cookies and ice cream and is located in Gaza City, has also sought Hamas protection from Israeli imports, said Manal Hassan, its executive director.

Destroyed Citrus

Oranges grown in Gaza are twice as expensive as those from Israel, where packaging materials are also 30 percent cheaper, Qannan said. As much as 85 percent of Gaza's citrus crop was destroyed by tanks and soldiers since 2000, much of it during Israel's 22-day military operation that ended in January 2009, according to Mohammed al-Agha, the Hamas agriculture minister, driving up the cost of the fruit.

The Israel Defense Forces said in an e-mailed response that the Hamas figure is wrong. It didn't say how much of the citrus crop was destroyed.

Mark Regev, an Israeli government spokesman, said the fact that Hamas is refusing to admit products allowed in by Israel shows that it "continues to put its extremist political ideology above and beyond the well-being of the people of Gaza."

Israeli leaders said last year's military operation was aimed at stopping the firing of rockets into southern Israel. Hamas is classified as a terrorist organization by the U.S., European Union and Israel.

Former Settlements

The blockade limited imports into Gaza to no more than 150 products, according to Raed Fattouh, the Palestinian Authority's liaison officer at Israel's Kerem Shalom crossing into the territory. Before the restrictions, some 8,000 products flowed into Gaza, he said.

The Hamas agriculture ministry, in an effort to restore the citrus crop, has planted 4,000 acres of trees in what Zaza described as "liberated" former Jewish settlements that Israel evacuated in 2005 when it also withdrew its troops from Gaza.

Qannan said it will take seven years before they bear the quality of fruit needed for juice.

Hamas ondermijnt de Palestijnse zaak

It's a pity that Israel, while substantially loosening its grip on Gaza, will continue to enforce a blockade when, with just a little imagination, it could insist on a deal with the activists once again steaming its way: You can proceed to Gaza if, once you get there, you demand that Hamas cease the persecution of women, institute freedom of religion, halt the continuing rocketing of Israel, release an Israeli hostage, ban torture and rescind an official charter that could have made soothing bedtime reading for Adolf Hitler. This may take some time.

Hamas is a threat to the Palestinian cause

It's a pity that Israel, while substantially loosening its grip on Gaza, will continue to enforce a blockade when, with just a little imagination, it could insist on a deal with the activists once again steaming its way: You can proceed to Gaza if, once you get there, you demand that Hamas cease the persecution of women, institute freedom of religion, halt the continuing rocketing of Israel, release an Israeli hostage, ban torture and rescind an official charter that could have made soothing bedtime reading for Adolf Hitler. This may take some time.

In fact, these demands would never be met. Gaza is a mean and brutal place with a totalitarian government steeped in a cult of violence and death. This hardly means that the government does not have a measure of popular support and did not, as some of the activists naively point out, come to power by democratic means. So did the Nazis.

The term "Islamic fascism" gets thrown around a lot. I initially recoiled from it because I prefer to reserve fascism for fascists. The term is too loosely employed -- New York City cops were called fascists by Vietnam-era peace demonstrators -- but Paul Berman, in his new book "The Flight of the Intellectuals," makes a solid case that it can, with justice, be applied to Hamas.

Berman traces Hamas's intellectual pedigree to Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood, whose founder, Hassan al-Banna, greatly admired Hitler, and to Haj Amin al-Husseini, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem who spent much of World War II in Germany cozying up to Hitler, organizing a Muslim SS unit and, on occasion, remonstrating with the Nazis for not killing enough Jews. (See also Robert S. Wistrich's recent book, "A Lethal Obsession.") It's appalling not only that Husseini was granted sanctuary in Arab countries after the war but also that he continues to be revered as a Palestinian patriot.

The successor to both Banna and Husseini was Sayyid Qutb (1906-66), an Egyptian intellectual of uncontested importance whose influence can be found in the writing of the Hamas charter. Qutb was an indefatigable author (more than 20 books, some written while in an Egyptian prison where he was tortured), but the article that should interest the pro-Hamas activists the most is called "Our Struggle with the Jews." It is a shocking and repellent work of anti-Semitism that, among other things, says the "Jews will be satisfied only with the destruction" of Islam. Qutb cites that hoary anti-Semitic forgery "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion" for substantiation -- suggesting that his status as an intellectual is somewhat due to heroic grade inflation.

The extremely useful term "useful idiots" was originally coined to describe Soviet sympathizers in Western countries. But there is no reason it cannot be applied to so-called activists who wish to break the blockade, which is an increasingly untenable exercise that Israel, bit by bit, is loosening. That's a good thing. But if Israel is expected to release its grip on Gaza, it's entitled to a bit of reciprocity -- at the very least the release of the hostage Gilad Shalit, who was captured not in Gaza but on the Israel side of the border. He has been held for four years now and has never once been visited by an outsider. How about maybe one ship in the approaching flotilla just for him?

Now is the time, I suppose, to say that Israel is not exactly perfect either. It continues to overreact, uses too much force and has often trampled on the rights of Palestinians. Still, Israel is Thomas Jefferson's idea of heaven compared with Gaza, which could serve as a seaside Club Med for Jew-haters. One country is consonant with the Enlightenment; the other is a dark place of religious intolerance where the firmest principles of anti-Semitism -- not anti-Zionism or pro-Palestinianism -- are embedded in the Hamas charter.

The irony is that Israel is often called a colonialist power. In some sense, the charge is true. But the ones with the true colonialist mentality are those who think that Arabs cannot be held to Western standards of decency. So, for this reason, Hamas is apparently forgiven for its treatment of women, its anti-Semitism, its hostility toward all other religions, its fervid embrace of a dark (non-Muslim) medievalism and its absolute insistence that Israel has no right to exist. Maybe the blockade ought to end -- but so, too, should anyone's dreamy idea of Hamas. It's not just a threat to Israel. It's a threat to the eventual Palestine.

World's unions reject boycotts, embrace Israeli-Palestinian cooperation
By ericlee

The international trade union movement has just delivered a stinging rebuff to advocates of the campaign to boycott Israel.

At its second world congress which just concluded in Vancouver, the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) rejected calls to support the boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) campaign targetting the Jewish state.

A vehemently anti-Israel resolution submitted by the Congress of South African Trade Unions never made it to the floor.

And in a stunning blow to pro-Hamas activists in some unions, the Israeli national trade union center Histadrut was honored by the global trade union movement.

Its leader, Ofer Eini, was elevated to the ITUC's 25-member Executive Board as well as its General Council.  Eini was also elected as one of the organization's Vice Presidents.

The ITUC has 312 affiliated organizations in 156 countries and territories representing 176 million workers.

Eini's election followed calls by major unions in the UK and elsewhere for the Histadrut to be boycotted.  Instead, the international trade union movement has embraced the Israeli unions, understanding them — correctly — to be important partners in building peaceful relations between Israelis and Palestinians.

In a resolution adopted by the ITUC congress, the positive role of the Histadrut was made explicit:

"Congress welcomes the landmark agreement between Histadrut and the PGFTU on the rights of Palestinian workers, which was finalised with the assistance of the ITUC in August 2008, and initiatives by Global Union Federations in their sectors to support cooperation in defence of workers' rights. This agreement, and other actions to promote decent work and end discrimination, are crucial to building the basis for just and equitable economic development."

For the future, the ITUC resolution declared:

"Congress commits the ITUC to continue to support the strengthening of cooperation between the Palestinian and Israeli trade union movements and calls upon the international community to support Palestinian economic reconstruction and development, including through the ILO Palestinian Fund for Employment and Social Protection."

In addition, the world's trade unions

  • Called for a two-state solution — and "universal recognition of Israel's right to exist, next to an independent viable Palestinian state"
  • Rejected "the extremist policies of Hamas"
  • Condemned the Egyptian "decision to impose heavy restrictions on its border with Gaza"
  • Acknowledged that Israeli's December 2008 attack on Gaza came "in response to rocket attacks"
  • Supported the 2002 "Road Map" for peace proposed by the United States, Russia, the United Nations and the European Union

The resolution adopted was highly critical of many Israeli policies, calling for an end to illegal settlements in the Palestinian territories, rejecting the blockade of Gaza and the building of a security fence, and so on.

But what stands out clearly is the commitment by the vast majority of the world's trade unions to a two-state solution and to strengthening Israeli-Palestinian trade union cooperation.

This is welcome news for Israelis and Palestinians and a blow to the supporters of Hamas who have tried hard to isolate and demonize Israel within the trade union movement.

Bolant Yilderim, the chairman of the IHH, a Turkish based pro-Palestinian organization that is spearheading the Gaza flotilla, delivered a radical speech at the ceremony to the applause of Turkish politicians and radical Islamic activists. "Israel behaves like Hitler did towards the Jews. Hitler built concentration camps in Germany, and today the Zionist entity is building concentration camps in Palestine," said Chairman Yilderim.

Portrait of Bülent Yildirim, leader of the radical Islamic Turkish IHH and his central role in preparing the aid convoy and violent confrontation with the IDF
www.terrorism-info.org.il/malam_multimedia/English/eng_n/html/ipc_099.htm

Overview
1. Bülent Fahmi Yildirim, 44, was born in Erzurum, Turkey, and studied law at Istanbul University. Today he lives in Istanbul and practices law. He is married and has four children. In 1995 the events in Bosnia and Herzegovina prompted him to help found IHH with the primary intention of providing humanitarian assistance to the battle zones.1 He eventually came to lead the organization. In the past IHH has been involved in providing logistic support for global jihad and terrorist networks in the Middle East and beyond. Bülent Yildirim's name was also mentioned in the past as providing support for the global jihad.
2. A study carried out by an American expert named Evan Kohlman examined the links between IHH and the global jihad. It indicated, among other things, that in the mid-90s Bülent Yildirim was involved in recruiting ex-military personnel and sending them to battle zones in Muslim countries to gain experience (Page 11 of the study). Between 2002 and 2004 Bülent Yildirim played a key role in inciting Turkish Muslims to anti-Americanism in the issue of the war in Iraq (Page 12 of the study).2
3. Bülent Yildirim is firmly attached to the Islamic regime of Erdogan, who was involved in IHH preparations for the flotilla. During the voyage Bülent Yildirim was on board the Mavi Marmara and played a key role in directing the IHH operatives' preparations for a violent confrontation with the IDF and in inciting them to violence with fiery speeches. He also ordered the operatives not to allow IDF soldiers on board the ship and to throw those who managed to board into the sea.

Yildirim's role in organizing the flotilla
4. Bülent Yildirim was the moving spirit behind the last flotilla and the most senior figure to accompany it on its journey. It began with purchasing the ship, organizing contributions and drawing up a list of passengers. Organizing the flotilla necessitated a long series of preparations and a vast organizational system which maintained contact with hundreds of organizations and operatives around the globe, most of them affiliated with radical Islam and the Muslim Brotherhood, and some of them pro-Palestinian from Western relief organizations.
5. It was not the first time Yildirim was involved in support for the Gaza Strip. In January 2010 he was responsible for organizing the Turkish section of the Viva Palestina convoy organized in London by a former British MP, the pro-Palestinian George Galloway. The Egyptians stopped the convoy and did not let most of its participants enter the Gaza Strip, and only some of them succeeded in reaching it.
6. Yildirim has very close ties with the highest echelons of the Turkish government, especially Tayyip Erdogan, who gave the government's blessing to the flotilla and according to all accounts helped organize it. Additional evidence for the ties were found in a letter in one of the lap top computers on board the Mavi Marmara. It was written by Bülent Yildirim to Turkish President Abdullah Gül and requested the release of IHH operative Izzam Shahin from an Israeli jail.3

Yildirim's ties with Hamas
7. IHH, headed by Bülent Yildirim, has close ties with Hamas and also provides it with funding. To further its activity with Hamas it established a branch in the Gaza Strip headed by IHH operative Muhammad Kaya. In January 2009 Bülent Yildirim met with Khaled Mashaal, head of the Hamas political bureau in Damascus.  Mashaal thanked him for his organization's support for Hamas.
8. In February 2009, after Operation Cast Lead, Yildirim visited the Gaza Strip and met with Ismail Haniya, head of the de facto Hamas administration. During his visit he attended a rally in the Gaza Strip in support of Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan, who criticized Operation Cast Lead at the Davos Convention.
9. Yildirim visited the Gaza Strip again in  January 2010 as part of the Viva Palestina convoy. During his visit he met with Ismail Haniya. Haniya gave Yildirim a letter for Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, inviting him to visit the Gaza Strip. At the meeting Yildirim stated that he intended to visit the Gaza Strip again with ships to render the "siege" superfluous (www.worldbulletin.net, January 7, 2010). At the end of January 2010 Muhammad Sawalha, a senior Hamas and Muslim Brotherhood activist in Britain, announced his intention to send another aid convoy to the Gaza Strip by sea to confront Israel and not Egypt (having learned the lesson of the Viva Palestina affair).

Preparations for the flotilla
10. Senior IHH personnel dealt with the practical preparations for the flotilla, in our assessment with the coordination and collaboration of senior figures in the Turkish government. Apparently most of the practical coordination and logistical preparations were carried out by Yavus Dede, Yildirim's deputy, and not by Yildirim himself. The preparations included purchasing the passenger ship Mavi Marmara and two cargo ships, in our assessment with the support and funding of the Turkish government.
11. On the eve of the flotilla's sailing, Bülent Yildirim often delivered fiery speeches about the activists' determination to reach the Gaza Strip, which included propaganda attacks on Israel (See Appendix). At the same time IHH operatives made practical preparations for the violent confrontation with the IDF which were kept secret from the other participants in the flotilla's "coalition." On May 16, 2010, about two weeks before the ships set sail, a meeting was held in Istanbul attended by representatives of the "coalition" of the six groups and organizations which had organized the flotilla. At that meeting IHH was represented by Yildirim's deputy, Yavuz Dede, not Yildirim himself.
12. As opposed to the hard core of IHH operatives who boarded the ship in Istanbul, Yildirim boarded in Antalya with other senior IHH figures and most of the flotilla's activists.

Briefing the operatives and fiery speeches made by Bülent Yildirim during the voyage
13. During the voyage itself Bülent Yildirim had practical control of the Mavi Marmara and in fact of the entire flotilla. He prepared the operatives for battle, briefed them before the confrontation and ordered them to fight the IDF soldiers. In our assessment he was in continuous contact with the organization's land command, where his deputy was in charge (and possibly with representatives of other organizations).
14. Evidence photographed aboard the Mavi Marmara documenting the voyage shows that a group of IHH operatives headed by Bülent Yildirim was the dominant factor controlling everything that occurred on board. The operatives all wore vests with stickers identifying them as "crew," which apparently enabled them to pass freely throughout the ship (while the movements of the ordinary passengers were limited). Most of the time the operatives were on the upper deck.
15. Bülent Yildirim and other senior IHH figures apparently kept to a designated area guarded by two IHH operatives in the media situation room on the lower deck. The area contained an editing room and the ship's computer security cameras. When the IDF soldiers entered the area they found large sums of money scattered around.
16. During the voyage the activists aboard the Mavi Marmara, especially the hard core of IHH operatives, received ideological and religious indoctrination from Bülent Yildirim and other Islamists, such as Arab Israeli sheikh Ra'ed Salah and Egyptian Dr. al-Baltagi, a Muslim Brotherhood representative in the Egyptian Parliament.
17. A video found on board, apparently taken by one of the photographers documenting the events on the upper deck, shows a meeting of operatives (most likely the IHH hard core operatives). The meeting was held during the day, apparently close to the time of the confrontation. The main speaker was Bülent Yildirim, who incited his audience and encouraged them for a possible confrontation with IDF forces. He stated that if Israel lowered commandos onto the ship the operatives should throw them down and humiliate Israel before the eyes of the entire world.4
18. During the voyage Bülent Yildirim was frequently interviewed by the media. In one interview he was photographed holding a small child. When asked about possible violence with Israel he said that the youngest passenger aboard the ship was one year old and that there were people in their 80s. He added that although their resistance would be non-violent, they would not allow Israeli soldiers to board the ship (IHH official website, May 29, 2010).  The flotilla's organizers wanted the confrontation with the Israeli Navy to take place during the day so that the media could document it and transmit it to the international media (Al-Jazeera TV, May 29; interview with the IHH's open channel, May 30, 2010).

The last briefing before the confrontation with IDF forces
19. In the hours before the IDF takeover of the ship Yildirim conducted preparations for the confrontation. Two hours before it (and after the Israeli Navy had hailed the ships) a kind of media situation room was set up. In addition, Bülent Yildirim briefed the hard core operatives who were supposed to confront the IDF on the upper deck. He instructed them to make a human chain and throw the soldiers back into the sea with chairs and iron bars. According to statements from IDF soldiers and visual material seized on board the Mavi Marmara, in practice the instructions were followed.

Yildirim questioned in Israel
20. During the takeover of the ship Bülent Yildirim was detained by IDF forces, brought to Israel, questioned, released (along with the other passengers) and sent back to Turkey. Under questioning he denied that the operatives had been organized for violence and that weapons had been prepared. He said that if there had been violence on the part of the passengers it was spontaneous and made use only of "available objects" (the vast amount of evidence in Israeli possession unequivocally proves that the version provided by Yildirim is not true).

Yildirim's statements after returning to Istanbul
21. As opposed to what he said during questioning, interviewed after his return to Turkey he did not contradict the fact that he and his men had used violence in dealing with the IDF soldiers and he even had a "legal" explanation. On June 4, 2010, the Turkish newspaper Zaman wrote that when Yildirim returned to Turkey he told newspapermen at the Ataturk airport in Istanbul that the Israeli investigators had asked him if he and his men had attacked the soldiers with iron bars and axes. He said that "we did what we did in self-defense," adding that "first our comrades neutralized ten soldiers. Yes, we took their guns away from them. You are considered legally innocent if you take a weapon away from someone who attacks you." He also said that they threw the guns they took from the soldiers into the sea (Todayzaman.com, June 4, 2010).

Appendix
Selected remarks by Bülent Yildirim (to the media and to IHH operatives aboard the Mavi Marmara)
1. The flotilla would be a "test" for Israel. He said that if Israel opposed it, it would be considered "a declaration of war" on the countries to which the activists on board belonged (Press conference in Istanbul, April 7, 2010).
2. He advised Israel to take care in conducting the crisis. If Israel prevented the activity of the ship, it would remain isolated in the world and harm itself (Yildirim to Israel at the sailing of the Mavi Marmara from Antalya, May 23, 2010).
3. "We are determined to enter Gaza, regardless of what happens" (During a press conference in Antalya before the ships set sail).
4. He said that children were brought aboard to prevent Israel from attacking the ship. He added that the organizers of the flotilla were in no hurry to set sail and were waiting for the right time, and perhaps in the meantime Israel "would begin thinking logically" (Interview aboard the ship, May 30, 2010).
5. "Form a human chain and throw the IDF soldiers back into the sea using chairs and iron bars" (Briefing the operatives on the upper deck before the IDF took control of the ship).
6. "The time before morning," he said, "will be a war of nerves. There are passengers from more than 50 countries aboard, and if we are stopped the honor of 50 countries will be sullied. We want the entrance of the Israeli embassies in Istanbul and Ankara locked, and we will protect themselves on board the ship. We know there is a price and we are willing to pay it. We will not retreat one step. Israel is acting like a  pirate in international waters. Will the world look on from the side?" (Press conference held during preparations for the confrontation with the IDF).
7. In a speech held during the voyage he said the following about Israel: "They are so weak that for the past four or five days they have been making propaganda against us and our flotilla. They see themselves as governing, but in reality they do not. Now they say that they will send the fleet [against us], that they will send in their commando and we tell them, if you send in the commando, we will throw you down from here and you will be humiliated before the whole world." (From a video found aboard the Mavi Marmara).

He said the attack is the latest sign of growing levels of extremism in Gaza. He said it provides further evidence "of the urgency to change the circumstances on the ground that are generating such extremism."

Ging has repeatedly called for lifting of the 3 year-old border blockade of Gaza by Israel and Egypt, arguing the sanctions have mostly hurt ordinary Gazans, not Hamas. The blockade was imposed after the violent Hamas takeover of Gaza in 2007.

UN summer camp in Gaza vandalized

Local UN chief: Vandalism "cowardly and despicable."

http://www.jpost.com/MiddleEast/Article.aspx?id=179762

A UN summer camp for children in Gaza was vandalized by two dozen masked men early Monday.

The vandals burned and slashed tents, toys and a plastic swimming pool. It was the second such attack in a month.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, but Islamic extremists have accused the main UN aid agency of corrupting Gaza's youth with its summer program of games, sports and human rights lessons for 250,000 children.

The UN's main competitor in running summer camps is Hamas, which says it has reached some 100,000 children. The Hamas camps teach Islam and military-style marching, along with swimming and horseback riding.

In Monday's attack, about two dozen armed and masked men targeted a seaside camp in central Gaza, one of dozens of UN sites across the Palestinian territory.

The assailants tied up an unarmed guard, then tried to set fire to two tents and a perimeter fence made from tarp-like material. Wielding knives, they slashed a plastic swimming pool, blow-up slide and other toys.

John Ging, the local UN chief, called it a "cowardly and despicable" attack and said the site would be rebuilt quickly.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

UNRWA condemns second attack on Summer Games locations

At 0230 on Monday 28 June 2010, a group of approximately 25 armed and masked men attacked and set fire to and destroyed an UNRWA Summer Games recreation facility on the beach in Nuseirat, Gaza. The guards at the facility were physically assaulted and handcuffed but they were not injured. Fortunately no one else was hurt in the incident.

The attack is the second of its kind in a month, following on from an attack on Sunday 23 May 2010 when a group of approximately 30 armed and masked men attacked and set fire to an UNRWA Summer Games recreation facility then under construction on the beach in Gaza city.

UNRWA's Director of Operations in Gaza, John Ging, condemning this second "cowardly and despicable act" said that "the overwhelming success of UNRWA's Summer Games has once again obviously frustrated those that are intolerant of children's happiness." He went on to say that "this is another example of the growing levels of extremism in Gaza and further evidence, if that were needed, of the urgency to change the circumstances on the ground that are generating such extremism." Ging said that UNRWA's response would be simple: "UNRWA will rebuild the camp immediately and will continue with its Summer Games program which is so important for the physical and psychological wellbeing of Gaza's children, so many of whom are stressed and traumatised by their circumstances and experiences." Ging also complimented the emergency services who were quick to respond and ensured that the damage caused by the attack was minimised.

UNRWA's Summer Games, conducted for the fourth year with the full support and involvement of the community, is the largest recreation program for Gaza's children providing a diversified set of activities including sports, swimming, arts and crafts, theatre and drama. The Summer Games commenced on 12 June and will run through 5 August, providing 1,200 summer camps for over 250,00 refugee children across the Gaza Strip.

The suffering of the Gaza Strip population has aggravated due to the deterioration of electricity services, which coincided with a wave of extreme hot weather.  Many people expressed their dismay for being pushed into the political conflict between the Gaza and Ramallah governments, especially as the current crisis coincides with the final exams of the General Certificate of Education (Tawjihi).  Due to the electricity outages, many areas suffered from extreme disruption in water supplies.  There are also concerns that access of people to basic services, such as health, education and sanitation, may be impacted.

Palestinian Centre for Human Rights

Position Paper on Aggravation of Electricity Crisis in the Gaza Strip

At midnight on Friday, 25 June 2010, the operation of Gaza Power Plant stopped as the industrial fuel necessary for its operation to produce 65 megawatts of electricity ran out.  The stoppage of the operation of the plant coincided with a wave of hot weather in the Gaza Strip and seriously impacted basic services provided to 1.7 million Palestinians, including drinking water and health and sanitation services.  The stoppage also caused extreme suffering to at least 36,860 students who have been attending final exams of the Genera Certificate of Education (Tawjihi) since 12 June 2010.  Electricity outages increased from 8-12 hours to 10-16 hours daily in most areas in the Gaza Strip.  The Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR) calls upon both governments in Ramallah and Gaza to prioritize the interests of the population, including the transfer of parts of the funds collected by the Electricity Distribution Company in Gaza to the Energy Authority in Ramllah, to ensure enough supplies of industrial fuel to operate Gaza Power Plant, in accordance with the April 2010 agreement between the two sides.

According to PCHR's field observations of the electricity crisis in Gaza, the operation of Gaza Power Plant stopped on Friday midnight, 25 June 2010, as the supplies of industrial fuel needed for its operation ran out.  Eng. Cana'an 'Obaid, Deputy Head of the Energy Authority in Gaza, stated the authorities in Ramallah were responsible for repeated stoppages of Gaza Power Plant through not fully paying the costs of industrial fuel to the supplying Israeli fuel company.

On the other hand, Dr. 'Omar Kittana, Head of the Energy Authority in Ramallah, stated to a PCHR researcher that coping with the current crisis requires that the Electricity Distribution Company in Gaza be committed to transfering the funds it is required to pay as its contribution to the costs of industrial fuel needed for the operation of one generator in the plant.  He also demanded that the company enhance the efficiency of collecting fees for electricity, explaining that the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) pays the costs of electricity supplies imported from the Israeli side and from Egypt and a part of the cost of the industrial fuel and maintenance, which means that the PNA covers 85% of the costs of electricity in Gaza.  He further called for implementing the April 2010 agreement, which obligates the Electricity Distribution Company in Gaza to pay approximately US$ 4 million in contribution to the costs of the industrial fuel needed for the operation one generator in Gaza Power Plant.  He stressed that no money transfers have been made this month.

PCHR has made contacts with all concerned parties in Gaza and Ramallah and followed up their positions expressed in the media.  PCHR has been able to obtain information and data that can serve as a basis for a crucial solution for the crisis of electricity outages and the stoppage of Gaza Power Plant:

·      Mr. Jamal al-Dirdissawi, Public Relations Officer in the Electricity Distribution Company in the Gaza Strip, stated that the current electricity crisis has been the most extreme, as electricity is cut off for 12 hours a day after 6 hours of availability.

·      Mr. al-Dirdissawi stated that the cost of electricity supplies for the Gaza Strip is estimated at 50 million NIS: 35-40 million NIS electricity supplies imported from Israel; 3.2-3.5 million NIS for electricity supplies imported from Egypt; 10 million NIS for industrial fuel designed for the operation of Gaza Power Plant.

·      Mr. Hani Salman, Financial Officer of the Electricity Distribution Company, stated that fees collected by the company each month are estimated at 15-20 million NIS, while the expenditures of the company are estimated at 3.5-4 million NIS.  He added that 22 million NIS has been transferred to the Energy Authority in Ramallah since the beginning of 2010; the last transfer was 2 million NIS this month.

·      Dr. Ghassan al-Khatib, Spokesman of the Government in Ramallah, stated that the current crisis of the industrial fuel for Gaza Power Plant is fabricated for political purposes related to making use of the suffering of people to gain support and incite against the PNA.  He confirmed that the PNA "covers 95-97% of the costs of energy consumed in Gaza, both that imported from Israel and Egypt and that produced in the Gaza Strip, where 1.5 million people live."  He added that the Gaza population's contribution to the total cost of electricity supplies "does not exceed 3-5%."

·      Eng. Suhail Skaik, Director-General of the Electricity Distribution Company in Gaza, stated the electricity outage crisis, which the people in Gaza have been suffering from for approximately 6 months, has peaked as the daily outage will increase to 16 hours daily because of the stopped operation of Gaza Power Plant.  He called for keeping the energy sector separate from ongoing factional differences.  He further called on alls parties to make efforts to put an end for the suffering of the Gaza Strip under the siege and the electricity crisis, which impacts all aspects of life, as the deficit in electricity supplies has amounted to 60%.

·      Eng. Skaik emphasized that the Ministry of Finance in Ramllah has been paying the costs of electricity supplies for the Gaza Strip from the three sources.  He added that his company was supposed to transfer US$ 4 million to the PNA this month, but it transferred only US$ 2 million.

·      It is worth noting that an agreement was concluded between the Electricity Distribution Company in Gaza and the Palestinian Energy Authority in Ramallah on 11 April 2010, under the auspices of representatives of Palestinian factions and independent figures.  Under the agreement, the Energy Authority in Ramallah would pay 36 million NIS for the cost of the industrial fuel purchased to operate Gaza Power Plant; on the other hand, the Electricity Distribution Company would transfer the fees it collects from the population in Gaza after discounting operational expenditures.

·       The Electricity Distribution Company suffers from an increasing deficit as at least 60% of the beneficiaries in the Gaza Strip do not pay their accumulating debts owed to the company.  These debts have amounted to 3 billion NIS, which has made the company unable to pay the costs of electricity produced by Gaza Power Plant.  On the other hand, thousands of beneficiaries, including public figures, politicians, businesspeople, traders and employees in governmental and non-governmental organizations, do not pay accumulated debts owed to the company although they can pay. They believe that the European Union provides Gaza Power Plant with industrial fuel for its operations, which has encouraged them to abstain from paying electricity bills.

PCHR is gravely concerned over the catastrophic consequences of that may result from the suspension of basic services in the Gaza Strip due to electricity outages, especially health, water and sanitation services.  PCHR has concluded the following:

·      The total money transfers from the Electricity Distribution Company in Gaza to the Energy Authority in Ramallah since the beginning of 2010, according to sources of the company itself, have been 22 million NIS, which constitutes 40% of the cost of industrial fuel for one month.

·      According to the financial officer of the company, the Electricity Distribution Company collects 15-20 million NIS from beneficiaries in the Gaza Strip each month, average of 87.5 million NIS in the first five months of 2010.  On the other hand, the company operational expenditures are estimated at 3.5-4 million NIS, which means that the company expended an average of 18.75 million NIS in the first five months of 2010.

·      Accordingly, the company has a surplus of 68.75 million NIS after discounting operational expenditures.  The question here is: Does the company have the surplus in its accounts? If yes, why does not it transfer such money, or at least the US$4 million monthly pay according to the April agreement?

·      PCHR reiterates that the government in Gaza has a duty to coordinate and cooperate with the Electricity Distribution Company in Gaza to collect accumulated debts from beneficiaries who are able to pay, including politicians, business people, traders, employees and governmental and non-governmental organizations, who have high accumulated debts, as a first step towards pressuring other beneficiaries to pay.  This measure will constitute a part of a strategic solution for the chronic electricity crisis, regardless of the availability of external funding.

·      PCHR calls upon the electricity distribution company to upheld the beneficiaries' right to obtain information on the electricity crisis, including the publication of names of people who do not pay highly accumulated fees, even though they are able to.

PCHR believes that people who pay electricity fees regularly should not endure the result of the failure of concerned parties of the electricity crisis, as these arties must provide them with electricity supplies in all circumstances.  PCHR is fully aware that the ongoing siege that has been imposed by Israeli occupation authorities for three years has created catastrophic economic situations for thousands of families, making them unable to pay the costs of electricity supplies; thus there is a need to reconsider mechanisms of assistance to such families, in which costs of electricity supplies should be taken into consideration in order for the electricity fees be paid to the Electricity Distribution Company.
